Virginia high school educator celebrates 2 decades of finding jobs for her students

BEDFORD, Va. (WSET) — It takes a special person to help others achieve their dreams. For Regina Carter, she has made a career out of helping others find theirs at Liberty High School in Bedford. But making this a career was not originally on her radar. "Once I got in the class setting and saw what it was all about," she recalled thinking "I can do this," said Carter, a special education job coach at Liberty High School (LHS).

Indiana University of Pennsylvania unveils $90 million John J. and Char Kopchik Hall

Over 400 people showed up to celebrate the grand opening of the John J. and Char Kopchik Hall at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday. The building has been in construction since 2020 and cost $90 million. It has over 140 thousand square feet and will serve as the university’s science and mathematics hub. The building is named in honor of IUP graduates Dr. John and Char Kopchik who made a $23 million dollar donation to IUP in April of 2018.

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Will the new year bring a new decision in the ongoing dispute over plans for a new casino in Centre County? More legal documents were filed Tuesday in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after the court, last year, decided to consolidate the casino project legal cases in lower courts. It was a year ago when the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board voted to approve a license for a so-called mini casino, at the former Macy’s store site at the Nittany Mall.

New bill would cut PA's gas tax by 1/3 until the end of the year

A new bill would cut Pennsylvania’s liquid fuels tax and provide a little relief at the gas pump for drivers. Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman (R-Bellefonte) introduced Senate Bill 10, or the Consumer Gas Prices Relief Act, Monday. The bill would slash the state’s gas tax by one-third through the end of the year. To make sure critical infrastructure projects aren’t delayed due to the cut, the lost revenue would be replaced by a mix of federal funds and a bond issue.

Northern lights in Alabama? Rare solar storm could bring auroras to southern US

WASHINGTON (TND) — The U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center on Thursday issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for a solar event which could impact a majority of Americans Friday into Saturday. Officials explained in a release they expect an eruption of solar material, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), to result in a geomagnetic storm. Along with the release was the rating of G4 for “severe,” which the agency has not issued since 2005.

Remaining wreckage of Flight 93 to return to National Memorial

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. -- Flight 93 National Memorial Park Superintendent Stephen Clark said the remaining wreckage from the ill-fated flight will return to the museum later this year. Clarik said this is following the longstanding effort by the Families of Flight 93 to return the wreckage to the site. Clark said the remaining wreckage of the jetliner that was hijacked by terrorists and crashed on the Sept. 11, 2001, has been stored at a secured unit since the FBI investigation concluded in 2001.

Unified Command to refloat M/V Dali for relocation amid bridge recovery efforts

'World Naked Bike Ride' 2022 start point announced

The starting point for this year's "World Naked Bike Ride" event in Oregon has been announced. The ride will start at Peninsula Park in North Portland on July 30 at 9 p.m. EDT. The Naked Bike Ride is a worldwide bike ride that looks to raise awareness of the vulnerability of cyclists and the dependence on pollution-based transport. Bellefonte man accused of intentional house fire and attempted murder amidst family feud

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — 6 News is learning the house fire in Centre County Thursday night was intentional. According to Spring Township Police, Matthew Davis of Bellefonte stole a gas tank from a neighbor and jammed it in the back of an SUV at a home along Vanessa Drive Thursday Night. They say he lit the SUV on fire which then spread to part of the home. Davis reportedly told police the owner of the home was a family member whom he had a long running feud with.

Bipartisan roadmap for AI regulation leaves a lot of unanswered questions

WASHINGTON (TND) — A long-awaited legislative roadmap to regulate artificial intelligence was unveiled this week after months of talks and research about what steps Congress needs to take to keep the rapidly advancing technology in check while protecting America’s place as a world leader in its development. A bipartisan group of senators that includes Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released their 31-page roadmap on Wednesday, proposing an annual $32 billion investment from Congress and laying out varying amounts of details on how to deal with some of the issues lawmakers are facing when it comes to AI regulation.
