The brand new high school football season kicks off Friday, Aug. 25, across western and central Pennsylvania. The WJAC-TV 6 Sports team held its third annual "High School Football Kickoff Special" Tuesday, Aug. 22. Area teams, bands and cheerleaders joined Jordan Conigliaro, Brett Hiltbrand and Kari Osep live for one full hour. 6 Sports Two-A-Days: Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference

JOHNSTOWN — The third conference of the 6 Sports Two-A-Days series is the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference. Richland is the defending LHAC champ. The Rams are coming off a 13-1 season. They made it to the state quarterfinals. But, 10 starters from that team graduated. Now, LHAC Coach of the Year Brandon Bailey has a new crop of talent. Bailey hopes this year's team can continue to be successful. Chestnut Ridge finished in second place in last year's LHAC standings.

Felon claimed 'claustrophobic and could not go in the back of my marked patrol vehicle'

(TND) — Apparently one of those license plate readers in Florida solved another crime. “I observed a silver vehicle that matched the description of a stolen vehicle that activated a license plate reader earlier in the evening,” a police officer wrote in the arrest report, last Wednesday, May 8.The Toyota Avalon was at a convenience store parking lot and the apparent driver was inside, buying lottery tickets. “I approached the male wearing a red shirt and dark pants,” the report said, “and advised that I needed to speak with him and was detained immediately.

Two injured in accident at Elk County paper mill, officials confirm

Elk County, PA (WJAC) — Officials with the Domtar Corporation in Johnsonburg have confirmed that two people were injured at their mill in Elk County last week. The company says the incident happened Thursday afternoon at their paper mill on Center Street. According to a company statement, two contractor employees were injured while working on a chip conveyor tunnel. Officials say the contractors were taken to the hospital and that an investigation into the incident is underway.

Clearfield, PA — Earlier this week, the Clearfield County Commissioners approved of mental health services for inmates at the Clearfield County Jail. One former inmate I spoke with said this will benefit those at the jail in the long-run. "I felt alone at times there's times that the depression was hard and the anxiety was hard. I wrote out to talk to somebody and never got a reply back," said Dustin Smith, a Clearfield native.

That's what prominent civil rights lawyer Ben Crump claims. The family of 23-year-old Roger Fortson hired Crump on Wednesday and he's asking for bodycam video. Dispatch calls released to WEAR revealed Okaloosa County deputies reported shooting Fortson within six minutes of dispatch getting the disturbance call.

Somerset County, PA — Things were visibly heated at the commissioners meeting, this week. Union staffing representative, George Critchfield and commissioners both saying the other party is holding up the increase in pay and training for 911 staff. This as concerns are being raised with the amount of actual staffing at the 911 center, union representatives calling it a skeleton crew.
