Rural decline and urban growth projected by 2050

Pennsylvania’s population is expected to decline in the coming decades. The Center for Rural Pennsylvania along with the Pennsylvania State Data Center held a press conference on Wednesday in Harrisburg to discuss recent findings about the future of the commonwealth’s population – projecting data from 2020 to 2050. “In brief, populations in Pennsylvania will experience significant change in the coming decades," said Dr. Kyle Kopko, the Center for Rural Pennsylvania's Executive Director during the conference.

Altoona man accused of 'deliberate abuse' of two young children, police say

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say an Altoona man has been charged with abusing two young children earlier this year. According to a probable-cause affidavit, on May 1, 26-year-old Zachary Huber took a 2-year-old boy to UPMC Altoona and claimed that the child had fallen off a scooter. The boy later had to be flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for treatment of fractures to his skull and femur.

State Theater officials still looking to bring IMAX to Johnstown through deed restriction

State theater officials said they are still waiting to see if they are going to be able to negotiate past a deed restriction stopping the IMAX theater plans. In the 1970s county amusements owned the state theater building, and when selling it to Lee Hospital put a restriction on the building that it could not be used to show motion pictures again. That restriction was found earlier this year and now owners of County Amusements, which owns Richland Cinemas, is looking to get paid to potentially take away that restriction according to executive director of the state theater foundation Eric Reighard.

Steelers re-sign long snapper, Pittsburgh native Christian Kuntz to 3-year deal

PITTSBURGH (WJAC) — Pittsburgh native and veteran long-snapper Christian Kuntz will remain a member of the Steelers, the team announced Thursday. The Steelers agreed to a new 3-year contract with Kuntz, allowing the Bridgeville native to stay with his hometown team. "I feel like it hasn't even hit me and my family and friends," Kuntz said this week of being a member of the Steelers. "I'm playing for the Steelers. It still hasn't hit me.

Study finds microplastics in 100% of human, dog testicles examined: 'Concerning'

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (TND) — Researchers at the University of New Mexico last week announced findings revealing the presence of microplastics in 100% of testicles involved in a study. Microplastics are extremely small particles of debris that break down from larger plastic waste in the ocean, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These particles can prove harmful to humans and animals if ingested. The study examined 47 canine and 23 human testicles for the presence of 12 types of microplastics.

Two historic Gettysburg homes soon available for rental

GETTYSBURG, Pa (CNN) — Looking for a unique vacation spot? Two historic homes on the Gettysburg Battlefield will be available to rent soon. The National Park Service says both the Michael Bushman and John Slyder houses will be available for overnight stays starting on May 24th. The Civil War battle of Gettysburg unfolded around the houses on July 2, 1863. The Bushman home is a two-story stone house built in 1808.

"Gas War" possibly underway in Richland Twp.

RICHLAND TWP., Pa. -- There's a possible "gas war" between Sheetz, the Giant Eagle "Get Go" and BP along Scalp Avenue in suburban Johnstown. The three competitors lowered their gas prices nearly 20 cents this past weekend making the cost around a $1.68 per gallon. According to Gasbuddy .com's daily survey, the average price for a gallon of gas in Pennsylvania right now is a $1.87. The three gas stations were very busy on Sunday and Monday.

Beaver Stadium sells beer inside to all fans for first time

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WJAC) — Beaver Stadium finally began beer sales Saturday, at the Nittany Lions' game against Northwestern University.
