9/11 artifacts escorted from Flight 93 to Port Matilda American Legion

Artifacts from the 9/11 terrorist attacks made their way through our area Tuesday as they were being escorted by the U.S. Veterans Motorcycle Club. After making stops at the Pentagon and Ground Zero, the artifacts were taken to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, where they were temporarily put on display during a brief ceremony. Some of the artifacts included a helmet worn by a Port Authority officer, metal signs from the World Trade Center and a cross that was created from the rubble.

Blair County Prison on lockdown as dozens of inmates test positive for COVID-19: Officials

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — Officials placed the Blair County Prison on lockdown Tuesday as the facility grapples with COVID-19 cases among inmates. Officials on the Blair County Prison Board say they were notified at 7:15 a.m. that Warden Abbie Tate placed the facility on lockdown status. They say the prison administration is enacting a modified “out of cell” schedule for inmates where it’s safe to do so. The Blair County Prison had 43 inmates who’d tested positive for the virus and 30 others are still waiting for results, officials say.

Road Trippin' PA: Horseshoe Curve

Our first trip is to the Horseshoe Curve which is a National Historic Landmark. Below, the museum curator lays out all the new exhibits that were created during the pandemic. The Curve opened up on February 15, 1854. Before that, if you wanted to travel from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, you had to use the mainline of public works with the Allegheny Portage Railroad, here locally.

Runaway teen believed to be in Johnstown area, may be with fugitive brother

JOHNSTOWN - Cambria County Children and Youth Services is looking for a runaway teen they believe is in the Johnstown area and may be with her brother, who is wanted in Allegheny County. CYS said that Leona Toney, 16, ran away from a living facility in Greensburg on Aug. 19 after CYS placed her in the home. She has brown hair and hazel eyes and is 5 feet 3 inches tall and weights roughly 150 pounds.

'It's not fair!' Jackson Township residents petition against potential closure of Jackson Elementary

Jackson Township residents showed up in force Monday evening to the Central Cambria School District board meeting in hopes of saving the Jackson Elementary School. It was recently reported that the school board is moving forward with a feasibility study to determine whether merging its elementary schools into one building would benefit the district. This comes as the district and its residents are facing a multi-million-dollar tax bill after the CPV powerplant was overvalued by nearly 5-times what it's worth, directly affecting taxes in the area.

Cambria Co. woman sentenced to jail time in healthcare fraud case

Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Federal authorities say a Cambria County woman has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. Prosecutors allege that Florentina Mayko defrauded Medicare and the Department of Health and Human Services by submitting “unnecessary” urine tests, from opioid patients, while working at a medical clinic. Investigators say Mayko then billed Medicare for over $10 million for those tests.

Centre Hall man, relative accused of sexually assaulting teenage girl

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Centre County say a Centre Hall man, and one of his relatives, are both facing charges after being accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl, in separate incidents. According to the affidavits, state police were contacted in late March after the 14-year-old victim had reportedly messaged a "witness," claiming that 44-year-old Raymond Warner was "attempting to have sex with her." Police say the victim also reportedly stated that she was intoxicated and "

Event helps dreams come true for sick kids

LORETTO, Pa. -- “She would be so proud,” said Beverly Bender. “Shortly before she died, she looked at me and said, 'Mom. Make-a-Wish was good to me, please be good to Make-a-Wish.' Making wishes come true: That's the goal of an annual event being held again this weekend in Cambria County. It's called Pickin’ For Wishes and it's the sixth year for the event. It's a bluegrass festival filled with music, food, games and crafts.
