Tuesday felt like musical chairs at the Centre County commissioners meeting as Commissioner Mark Higgins moved into the chair position. Michael Pipe has held the chair position since 2016, but he will soon be leaving later this month to take a job as Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Safety in newly elected governor Josh Shapiro's administration.

Lawmakers to introduce legislation observing K9 Veterans Day in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — Two Pennsylvania lawmakers say they are planning to introduce legislation that would designate March 13 as "K9 Veterans Day" in the Commonwealth. Currently, several other states, including New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, and West Virginia, recognize the "holiday." If passed, the legislation would require the Governor to issue an annual proclamation calling upon Pennsylvanians to observe the day with various educational activities and programs. K9s first began training to serve in the armed forces in 1942 and continue to do so today.

Man found guilty of beating girlfriend's son to death while she watched

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (WOAI/KABB) — A jury has convicted a man accused of beating his girlfriend's 5-year-old son to death and dumping his body in the river. Daniel Garcia was on trial for the 2021 murder of 5-year-old Domenic Aguilar Acevedo. Police say Domenic was at an extended stay near Fort Sam Houston when he was beaten to death. The boy's mom and her boyfriend were accused of trying to cover up what happened by tossing his body in the Colorado River.

Alexandria man convicted of raping, trafficking teen girl

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Blair County say an Alexandria man faces decades behind bars after he was convicted of raping and trafficking a teenage girl on Easter weekend in 2021. Police charged Donald Hetrick in late 2022 in connection to a sex trafficking investigation at a Blair County hotel. Authorities say officers discovered messages between Hetrick and his co-defendant, Nikkia Beck, in which the pair reportedly planned to pay the teenage victim to come to the hotel to engage in sexual acts.

Hollidaysburg man arrested for rape of 12-year-old girl

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — A Hollidaysburg man has been arrested after police say he raped a 12-year-old girl. According to a police report, 19-year-old Donovan Lynch was arrested after a child rape incident was reported to state police in Hollidaysburg. Police say the incident happened in Frankstown Township between April 25 and April 28. Lynch is being held in the Blair County Prison. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
