Pleasant Hill Baptist Church officials remain optimistic after gathering for first time since losing

Early Tuesday morning, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, located along Peelor Street in Johnstown, was deemed a "total loss" by fire crews on scene. On Sunday, members of the church gathered for a service for the first time since at Shiloh Baptist Church on Menoher Boulevard. They said it was a celebration of their pastor Clyde Williams Jr. ninth year with the church, and it is an anniversary they will not be forgetting.

Barbie to make dolls honoring Venus Williams, other star athletes

U.S. tennis star Venus Williams is one of several athletes and role models being honored by Barbie-maker Mattel in a new project to inspire young girls to follow their passions. Mattel unveiled the dolls on Wednesday, each of which comes with their own accessories from their respective sports. The others being depicted as dolls are gymnasts Rebeca Andrade and Alexa Moreno, soccer players Mary Fowler and Christine Sinclair, boxer Estelle Mossely, swimmer Federica Pellegrini, paratriathlete Susana Rodriguez and track and field sprinter Ewa Swoboda.

Commissioners at odds over approval of proposed contractor ordinance in Centre Co.

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — More controversy and disagreement over plans by the Centre County Commissioners to establish new regulations for those working on large scale, county government construction projects. The commissioners are considering what is termed a “responsible contractor ordinance.” They say at least two of the commissioners feel it will increase worker safety on county capital construction projects, along with alerting the county to potential bidder issues. But one commissioner isn’t on board with the proposed ordinance.

ALTOONA, Pa (WJAC) — Officials with PA CareerLink announced that due to the ongoing flood remediation at the Altoona Public Library, a temporary CareerLink site will open at the Downtown Altoona Transportation Center, beginning on Monday, Feb. 1. “With so many people out of work, many are looking to the future. Bedford County, PA (WJAC) — Next month, Irish vocalist and musician Neil Byrne will return to Bedford County for a stop on his first ever solo tour in the United States Byrne is a famed member of the internationally successful group Celtic Thunder and previously made a stop in Bedford while touring with Ryan Kelly --- another member of the group. He has been a part of Celtic Thunder since the group's founding in 2007.

Chemical castration bill aimed toward repeat sex offenders in legal talks

Cambria County, PA — A bill proposed by Senator Langerholc, a Republican for Pennsylvania’s 35th District, would require qualifying sex offenders to be injected with a chemical castration drug before their release. Langerholc says this piece of legislation would not only apply to people who have committed multiple sexual crimes, but also male offenders who are convicted of committing these crimes against children under the age of 13. The Richland Township Republican says it will be up to the judge when the person can be taken off of the drug.

Former Somerset DA sentenced up to 7 years in prison for assault conviction, must register as sex of

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Former Somerset County District Attorney Jeff Thomas was sentenced Thursday to serve 27 to 84 months in prison following his assault conviction earlier this year. Thomas is also required to register as a Tier 1 sex offender for 15 years. In March, a jury returned a split verdict in Thomas' trial after finding him not guilty on the most serious charges that he faced. The jury did, however, find him guilty on six charges including strangulation (in conjunction with sexual violence), criminal trespass, unlawful restraint, indecent assault without consent, false imprisonment, and one count of simple assault.
